On 30th November, 1917, the day on which William Humphrey was killed, the 16th Lancashire Fusiliers battalion of 96 Brigade, 32nd Division were in the front line trenches near Irish Farm in the northern part of the Ypres salient. At 7am the enemy opened a heavy artillery barrage which resulted in retaliatory action from the British guns and the duel went on for an hour before things quietened down once more. |
